Dirk's second CD, "QuinnTet" is every bit as great as his debut CD. These guys have crafted a style that is truly unique, and it is evident that they have further honed their already impressive skills as individual musicians and collectively as a band in this new offering. These guys are excellent as a live band, and they really capture their synergy perfectly on this CD. I can imagine that I am there at their performance while I listen. In two words: frickin' awesome!
I am a fan of Dirk Quinn Band and it was this new release that turned me on. This cd is listed as jazz. But I liken it to jazz meets funk meets rock meets jam band.
First listen to Evil Birdman of Funk then Davel's Return. Now I'll tell you why I love this stuff. There is so much in this album that is unexpected least of all trumpet and steel drums. QuinnTet is action-packed, contradictory and fun. That's what sucked me in and blew me away. I heard his first cd, Dirk Quinn, and thought it was good. But I appreciate it so much more now that I've heard both QuinnTet and Dirk Quinn. They are so diverse and show the true scope of this artist. He's got infectious guitar grooves, shows both creativity and diversity throughout the album in writing and arranging without compromising the album's story as a whole.
It's the kind of album I can listen to over and over without getting bored. Can't wait for the next one!
